The Best of Fish Hoek
The
quaint seaside village of Fish Hoek, is one of the
Cape Town’s most popular holiday destinations,
especially with those who enjoy the outdoors. It is
renowned for its friendly hospitality, proximity to
many tourist
attractions and activities.
Fish
Hoek appears on the earliest maps of the Cape as
Vissers Baay or Visch Hoek. The arrival of European
settlers in 1652 forced the indigenous population to
leave the area, and the beach was used on an
informal basis for
whaling and fishing, but it was not until 1918 that
it was laid out as a township.
Surrounded by rugged mountains, it boasts
magnificent walks both into the mountains and along
the white sandy beach. The beach is recognised as
one of the best swimming beaches in the Cape and
also attracts surfing,
sailing, snorkeling, hobie-cat sailing, paddleskiing
and sunbathing enthusiasts.
Take a
relaxing stroll down Jager’s walk, a pathway along
the rocky coastline as far as Sunny Cove and watch
dolphins and whales when they visit us during the
winter months. Whales frequent the waters in the
area and visitors and locals alike delight in
watching their antics as they come in close to
shore.
The
mountains offer scenic walks through indigenous
fynbos and the most awesome views. Just a short
climb up the dunes from 19th Avenue is Peers Cave
with views across the valley and a peep intro
stone-age history.
The shallow cave was once used by prehistoric man as
shelter, and the fossilised skeleton of Fish Hoek
man was discovered by Victor Peers and his son. For
the more energetic Elsies Peak walk is straight up
Outspan Road to the top of the mountain to a
protected area, and is well worth the effort.
Be
sure to add Fish Hoek to your destinations list.
With a selection of activities, easy shopping and
perfect setting, this village will certainly give
you an unforgettable holiday and many happy
memories. |
