Getting there : Tours & Self Drives
Whether you choose to explore this beautiful part of South Africa on your own steam, or prefer to book a tour, you are sure to treasure the memories, the experiences, photos and friends you will gather on The Cape to Addo Route.
It was early one wintry Sunday, when we were picked up in Cape Town by Cape to Addo Tours. We were a group of nine tourists, ranging from a Ukrainian school-leaver to a retired gent from Germany – each with our own unique expectations.

Carmen experiences her first elephant ride at the Elephant SanctuaryEvery day of the seven-day tour offered us another awesome experience. In the evenings, when the day was done, we’d share our excitement around camp-fires or in the backpacker’s lounges.

From the Kiwi adrenalin-junkie to the star-gazer, we were impressed by the awesome scenery, the warm hospitality and the variety of activities this route has to offer.

It was Spring and time for our next trip. In just a few weeks, the landscape had painted a fresh, colourful new picture.

We were amazed at the beauty as we drove our car along seemingly endless wide-open spaces, and manoeuvred our way through breath-taking passes.

We felt revitalised and completely safe as we discovered quaint hamlets in the Klein Karoo, and dined in trendy city restaurants.

Despite patches of road-works, the roads were good, and we didn’t loose our way. (Not a bad feat for two girls!)

As we recall both our trips from Cape Town to Addo, we recognise that both the organised tour and the self-drive, offer tremendous value for money, and priceless memories.

We look forward to our next trip along this amazing route, which we call:
South Africa’s Ultimate Adventure!

So much to do : Adventure & Activities

“So much to do, so little time!” This coined phrase certainly applies to the Cape to Addo Route: The Ultimate South African Experience. Yet a single day in a single spot along this approximately 2000km route can be filled with adventure and activities, with memories to treasure for life.

Michelle braving the cheetahs in OudtshoornThe route is jam-packed with action for the extreme-sport fanatic: from the world’s highest bungee off the Bloukrans Bridge; Ziplining over waterfalls and trees in Tsitsikamma; Blackwater tubing; sky-diving in the beautiful Wilderness; speed boat and jet-ski rides on one of our two oceans; shark cage- and deep-sea diving; surfing the world-renowned Super Tubes at Jeffery’s Bay, to coming face to face with the magnificent Big Five at Addo National Elephant Park.

For the brave-but-not-so-crazy folk there are challenging 4x4 trails and eco-adventures in the Klein Karoo, quad bike trails through the countryside, fishing charters in Mossel Bay, and mountain bike rides in the Swartberg region.

The route includes nature reserves and game parks, wildlife sanctuaries and coastlines of both the warm Indian Ocean and the colder Atlantic Ocean. As such the visitor is spoilt for choice with a host of activities and adventure, and excellent photo opportunities.

Capture the awe of the famous Cango Caves, or freeze the moment when a Southern Right Whale breaches just metres from your boat. Take home memories of elephant rides and feeding, and of petting a cheetah. Canoe down the Sundays River and kayak in the oceans. Learn about our bird species and indigenous medicinal plants.

Be pampered at the spa and relax in hot mineral springs, and be sure to take home a few local aloe products, some handmade ceramics, crafts and candles. And when the day is done, tuck into an ostrich steak and sip some local wines.

So take some time, as much as you can, and explore the many options on the Cape to Addo Route — South Africa’s Ultimate Adventure!
