Experience Hout By

Some of my most treasured holiday photographs take me back to one of the most beautiful places on earth, the quaint little fishing village of Hout Bay, just 20 minutes drive from Cape Town’s city centre.

While the pictures date back to my early teens and are now somewhat faded, my memories are not, and I am fortunate that I now live but a stones-throw from this popular and beautiful tourist destination.

As I relive my Hout Bay holiday experience, I am reassured that, despite development and growth in the area, the charm of Hout Bay has not been lost, and that it has maintained its unique combination of fishing harbour and friendly country atmosphere.

Hout Bay’s beauty is unforgettable. Surrounded by fynbos-covered mountains with The Sentinel majestically guarding over its calm indigo bay, and a gentle river flowing through the middle, Hout Bay boasts magnificent scenery which will reward even the amateur photographer.

Hout Bay visitors can’t miss taking a drive up Chapman’s Peak Drive to take in the breathtaking views. From here you can capture glorious sights as boats and jetskis busy their way in and out of the harbour. And when the day is done you will be spoilt with dramatic sunsets to add to your photo album.

During the winter months you can spend hours watching the Southern Right whales. As they travel south to calve in our warmer waters, they too can’t resist playing in this beautiful bay.

Winter is also the time that Hout Bay attracts surfers from around the world, who brave the most awesome African waves, known as ‘Dungeons’.

The sandy, white beach invites you to take a stroll, fly a kite, play with the children, watch the gulls, or to simply relax and worship the sun.

No visit to Hout Bay is complete without a boat trip to Duiker Island, or ‘Seal Island’, and my album boasts endless photos of basking seals. I probably have as many photos of the most beautiful and colourful birds captured at Africa’s largest bird park, right here in Hout Bay.

Being a fishing village, Hout Bay has the freshest seafood on offer, and local restaurants are renowned for their excellent fare. From linefish to hand-picked mussels, you simply can’t get better! Some of the nicest folk I have met are friendly hosts of guest houses, and the selection of outstanding accommodation in Hout Bay will
leave you planning your next visit to this magnificent part of South Africa.

So whether you’re looking to explore, seeking adventure or simply want to relax ... add the most treasured memories and photos to your collection, and EXPERIENCE HOUT BAY!
